Help with resolving error message

Hello everybody ...

I was trying to sort out an issue with widget short code not working and added a line of code to the end of functions.php in a wordpress theme.

After I pressed "update file" i got the following message ..

"Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/content/17/11501017/html/pennhebrongardenclub/wp-content/themes/pinboard/functions.php on line 2266"

I get this error no matte what I do.

The code for line 2266 is as follows:

<?php _e( 'Use the information below or try to seach to find what you\'re looking for:', 'pinboard' ); ?></p>

I am hoping somebody is able and willing to help me sort this out.

There are no PHP syntax errors in the small code snippet you posted above, nor are there any in the pastebin link you provided above. Are you sure you're examining the correct file?

We don't need a URL... nor do we need to see the error message in our browsers. We just need to see the source code that's causing the error.

Are you sure you've posted the contents of the correct file? Did you directly view that file (shell access, download via FTP, etc.) rather than using any sort of GUI WordPress may provide?

There's a missing semicolon, but I'm not sure if that's the cause of the error or not, as the unusual method of coding makes that block hard to read.

I finally got this to parse, maybe it will help, idpweb:

Line 2262 in the Pastebin:

That was the first thing I fixed, but it still wouldn't lint. After removing all the mode changes and the ENDIF syntax I got it to work, but I wasn't writing down every step I took and I'm really not sure when I fixed the issue, which my (php -l) was reporting as UNEXPECTED "}" at line $foo

The closing "?>" tag acts as a semicolon if needed (reference: [man]language.basic-syntax.instruction-separation[/man]). The pastebin code showed no syntax errors for me when I ran a lint check against it. Additionally, this example code:

produced the correct output with no errors for me.

I wouldn't expect it to, in either case. I simply took the wrappered function out and linted it. Possibly a very complex bug, if it is indeed a bug.
