"Main difference" sounds pretty subjective and may yield a lot of varied opinions. How about a list of facts or suggested points of investigation?
.Net will only run on about 1/3 of the Internet's servers.
PHP Wins! Well, based on a rough paragraph count, this guys thinks so anyway.
Short, sweet, to the point...
Do you suppose this has been discussed on StackOverflow? Do ya? Really?
I'd submit that the real issues here are very complex and may never quite be quantified. Issues like programmer talent and time, both of which affect the bottom line when deploying software. If you can find PHP guys with equivalent or better talent who'll take less money to do the work, that's a pretty tantalizing business reason to use PHP. But I'm not cognizant of all the stats on who makes more money or is smarter --- that's a pretty tall order to figure out.
Performance does have an effect; it's been shown, for example, that page load times correlate (inversely, right?) with user satisfaction and bounce rates. Is it still generally accepted that 'Nix apps/servers run faster than MSFT products? I'm not sure, and, besides, typically the speed of an app is affected in large measure by the talent and level of understanding of the programmers in designing software that will scale.
I might submit that the success of Facebook might say something about PHP, but you could counter that the fact they created Hack to overcome some PHP "shortcomings" might counter that. Given that Twitter is on Ruby and Pinterest on Python, I'm not sure what we can really prove by pointing to the "big guys". Perhaps the fact that they prefer to keep some $$ instead of paying licensing fees for thousands of servers is worth something. 🆒
