Open in a new page

I have the following code

echo "<td><a href='scam.php?id=" . $row['user_id'] . " '>Get a Score</a></td>";

It works fine but I would like it to open in a new window - i have tried so many combinations but I just keep getting errors

Sure its just a syntax thing ?

Historically this was done with a target attribute of "blank":

<a target="_blank" href="foo.html">Click here</a>

XHTML doesn't allow a target attribute, however.

I do think that it's still OK in HTML5 ... so the question becomes, what's your DOCTYPE for the page in question?

HTML5 does indeed allow the target attribute. Had no idea XHTML didn't, though. TIL.

Personally, I think that this is a job for clientside scripting, and if the user has clientside scripting disabled... he/she can always make good use of the browser to specify that the link is to be opened in a new window, and that choice was probably intended by the exercise of the right to disable clientside scripting.

I use Kevin Yank's "externlinks()" for just that purpose. A tad cumbersome that links have to have a "rel='external' attribute set, but not much diff from "target='blank'" in HTML....
