Well, hmm. Interesting, and even moreso that she's putting all her code on GitHub and blogging about it.

I once made 65 websites in one day. Of course, that was mostly a lot of work with mkdir and Apache config files, and something similar to this:

I can't throw the code out there because management doesn't "get" non-proprietary software, thinking instead that any disclosure would give our competition "the edge". :eek:

Well, as I said, it's domain-name magic. There's a common header, body, and footer for each, and each has it's own config file that contains variables the header, body and footer use to decide what to show/say. They use a common database and the whole thing was (is?) fairly well automated, apart from setting up the Apache config files, which were also just copies of each other with the pathnames and server names changed. The content comes from a Google RSS feed, so it's really more of a gimmick to say "I made 65 websites in a day". I made one website that has 65 different <h1> tags and feed content ...

The other corollary to that is that the once site we think might actually be able to pay for itself someday still isn't "finished" and I've been here nearly six years. It's live, and it works, and each month we make a few more dollars and the traffic seems to build a bit (albeit with some seasonal reversals). But there's some projects you only escape from by death or changing jobs ...

I'd always thought unless it was something like Facebook or YouTube when a job was done it's done

As for making money online I have some adsense it makes about £32 a month, which seems a lot to me currently 😃

We compete with all kinds of places, we're finding, including perhaps eBay, *******, etc. Some things are working, others seem to be harder to break into or figure out.

As for AdSense ... we don't make much more than that on ours, if that much. The company, on the other hand, gets by, but I've had about 2 "profit-sharing" checks in 6 years, if that tells us anything. Of course, that accountant that stole about a year's salary from the company probably ruined a few of those checks for all of us.

As far as the original "web site a day" concept, it's a somewhat artificial limitation, as it limits the size/extant of any of those web "sites". Amazon.com is a web site, and no one person is going to build that in a day, or week, or month, or.... A simple static site with a couple static pages and a "contact me" page -- maybe you could whip that up in a day, but what does that prove?

Perhaps more interesting would be to build one web site in 6 months, and document the features that are added, the changes that are made, the dead-ends that are backed out of, etc., on the way to a full-featured, multi-functioned web site. 🙂

Exactly ... as a matter of fact, you could document the whole process, including all business decisions, and write a book, and sell it on said Amazon site. 😃

Of course, saying "Amazon.com" is a web site" is kind of like saying "Google is a search engine". Both of those are much more than what the public sees on their home page, as you're aware.

My personal projects go through spurts of activity and no changes for months. At work, its keep focused or look for a new job.

Yeah, as far as personal projects, the only thing I've really done this past year or more is creating my no-DB blog, just to see if I could. Most of that was one weekend, then some tweaks/fixes over the next couple of weeks.

Maybe worth me trying, you mean for example if it has a database draw EERM, make gnat charts ect? Basically write a SyRs too?

If that's how you went about building it, sure. What I was imagining was not simply a tutorial about how to build a non-trivial web site, but to document whatever processes were used, choices that were made, and so forth, and when appropriate use some 20/20 hindsight to analyze which choices were good and which were not so good -- and why.

Well I had been toying with one idea for along time that is complex, I'd started it but hadn't made much progress to be honest.

Basic idea was a geolocation based website where shop owners and users could register, the shop owners would be able to add their locations into a database and users would be able to "use my location" to find locations by selecting a certain menu i.e coffee shops, in addition to this if the user was logged in then in a similar way to amazon it would recommend places based on views and "check-ins" made by the user

Also maybe without using frameworks, everything done from scratch

One of the choices you would document, explaining why you made that choice -- and then later on analyzing if it turned out to be a good choice for your particular goals (which might include learning objectives, mind you).

Ok, I can do this maybe. Tomorrow morning I'll sit down with Microsoft project and make a project plan and start a blog to record everything. Any other constraints I should add?
