I did some more investigation and now it appears that it works for anyone, but only after visiting another page on the site, which means I think it fails a REFERER check ... weird.

    I liked having user signatures, sometimes they had useful or interesting things in them. Petition for signatures back?

      Problem with signatures is that spammers liked to create an account, make a bunch of reasonably acceptable posts, then add their spam links to their signatures.
