Current Directory?

I've been looking through the documentation that I have, as well as my past projects, and I can't seem to find a way to locate the current directory that I'm in (in a PHP script).

I'd like to be able to take a known path (for instance, the path to an include file) and my current path, subtract the two, and find out how far up [or down] I need to go. Any ideas?

If you are on a unix server you can get the current dir by using something like:

$current_dir = exec("pwd");

print $current_dir;
