DATABASE PERSISTENT CONNECTIONS ?

Hello there,
My problem is:

I have to develop a simple e-commerce application (e-shop). I need to be stable and fast.

I'm a PL/SQL developer for 7 years now but
this time I won't use OAS.. just FREE apache and PHP but Oracle is a MUST.

I have to compare PHP with PL/SQL in terms of:
stability
speed
* reliability

I'm, already, testing PHP using OCI (php_oci8.dll - no persistent connection yet) but

the problem is the CONNECTION delay time so:

1 I need information about php persistent connections using oracle (or any other db in general)

I don't want to connect/recconect each time user requests a page.Any suggestion?

I should forget PHP!

Any URL? code? tutorial?

let say I'm using a persistant connection:
do I need to close the connection (ex. using ocilogoff)?
And:
Can I use an existing connection to all my php pages?
how exaclty persistant connections work?

Ok! I know that I don't need to to close a persistant connection, but my question is:

I do not see any diff when using a persistant connection on win2K,
Can I use the same connection in the Nth page
(where N=2..10) without using ociPlogin?

OCIPLogon function works great at my site (Solaris 2.7/Oracle8i v8.1.5.1/Apache 1.3.12/PHP4 rc1) BUT it hangs my oracle dispatchers and/or connection managers from time to time. My current and working solution is to either kill the dispatchers/connection managers or restart the database. Has any one seen this before? We are going into production.

First of all you have THE OS!!!
Solaris is the best by far....

I suppose you have compile php as apache because PERSISTENT CONNECTIONS work only with multithreaded servers. I do not know any solution to your problem...

Currenly I'm testing php under Win2000 advanced server. I'll say ONE THINK:
APACHE SUCKS UNDER WIN32. if anyone wants to run php under win32 (not on game machines like win95 and win98) shoulld USE PHP as ISAPI (IIS). I've already tested:

Apache and php (as CGI)
Apache and php as apache module
IIS and php (as ISAPI)

and you can't image the diferrence!!!
PHP AS IASPI IS AT LEAST 5 TIMES FASTER THAN CGI.

Soon I'll test php under my SUSE LINUX because I'm going into production too!!

Hi,
do you suggest to use a persistent connection or not ? (it is for an e-commerce site) ?
Also, do you know how to find a good oracle php class that make the manipulation of oracle simpler ?
