collecting data from the serial port

can anybody help me out on this ??? ..

is there a script that will allow me to extract data from the serial port ..
i have a device that passes certain data through the serial port .. and i want to retrieve the information from the serial

You might be in trouble... You can always <i>try</i> calling fopen("com1","r+")
and see what happens when you read from/write to the resulting object...

I am in the same situation looking for a way of reading data from the serial port. Has anyone had success with this in between? Is there maybe a way to use perl, python, java or something else to do the reading from the serial port and transmit the data to a php-Skript?

I had a script doing this very thing. I was reading info from a CID modem and paging myself if I didn't answer after 4 rings...the only problem I ran into was having to initialize the serial port via minicom (and exit w/o reset) before my script would actually read anything from the port.

hope this helps...if anyone can PHP-ize the minicom initialization I would be very interested in seeing it.

There is plenty of code out there for doing this with PERL on Linux. You guys might try porting to PERL code to PHP.

Windows? Go to msdn.microsoft.com . Search for a VB snippet. Then convert the VB code to PHP. You'll probably need to encapsulate some windows object to communicate with the com port. There are plenty of examples of encapsulating windows objects on this board: I saw some people encapsulating CDO email objects on this board, for example.

Warning: don't do it on win 98 -- it can cause you to reboot when you first learn how to do it. Only win NT or 2k. XP? dunno.
