PHP + ODBC

Hello,

I installed PHP 4 and can't connect to an Oracle database via ODBC. The error message I get is:

Warning: SQL error: [Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name, SQL state 08001 in SQLConnect in c:/Apache/htdocs/test.php3 on line 3

I'm running Apache and PHP4 from a Windows NT machine.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks,

ODBC IS DEAD!!!

REPLYING TO YOUR REQUEST:

CREATE A DNS NAME USING ODBC and ORACLE ODBC DRIVERS (NOT MICROSOFT ODBC DRIVERS FOR ORACLE!!!!)
CREATE A DATABASE ALIAS USIGN SQLNET EASY CONFIGURATION AND TRY AGAIN!!

TNS:could not resolve service name,

THIS ERROS MEANS: "oops i can't see your db alias (aka service name)"

Thanks very much for this suggestion. It looks like you've found the issue. I just need to hunt around for the Oracle ODBC drivers.

Let's say you are trying to connect with
oracle :
loginfunction("username",password","dbalias")

TNS:could not resolve service name

Means: "oops I can't see the given alias into tnsnames.ora"

If you have ORacle CD then you have ODBC drivers.
If you don't have oracle cd
take a look at :technet.oracle.com. register first it's free!
I know that there are some open source drivers for ORacle (search at : freshmeat.net using the keyword:oracle) but I have not tested yet.

But do not use ODBC (even microsoft hates ODBC, use ADO, DAO for SQL server access)
send me you email and I'll give you OCI library for oracle8i (I should post this library in this site!!!)

Well, I installed the Oracle ODBC drivers and tried the same thing again. I got a similar message:

Warning: SQL error: [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name , SQL state 08004 in SQLConnect in c:/Apache/htdocs/test.php3 on line 3

I set up the Oracle ODBC driver to use the same datasource that I set up in Oracle Easy Config. Any other thoughts?

You'v been a big help, so if this is getting too involved, don't worry about it. If you have time to send me some more advice, I would very much appreciate it.

Interestingly, I found this post from another user under the ODBC_Connect function on the PHP.net site:

"I am trying to connect to an Oracle Database through PHP4, but ODBC can't connect. I traced the ODBC calls and found out that the call to SQLConnect is not working, while all other applications use SQLDriverConnect work. I am using Apache and PHP4 on Windows NT. Anyone can help? "

I think this is the same problem I'm having. I wonder if it's a PHP4 bug?

SORRY I HAVE NOT TEST ODBC CONNECTIVITY YET.

TRY THESE STEPS IF THERE IS NO SUCCESS THEN FORHET ODBC AND TRY PHP_OCI8.DLL

FOLLOW THESE STEPS

1. Create a DBalias using SQL Net easy configuration or
   manually just open "tnsnames.ora"

2. Put this ALIAS into:
   A new System DSN -> Oracle ODBC Driver ->
   DSN Configuration Window:
   ...
   
   Service name:
   DBALIAS (NOT ORACLE SERVICE NAME!!!!!!!).
   ...
   !!! BE CAREFULL WHEN YOU CREATE A DSN !!!
   USE "DBALIAS" as SERVICE NAME NOT ORACLE SERVICE NAME (e.x. ORCL). THIS IS NOT A BUG JUST REMEMBER THAT YOU CANNOT "SEE" THE DB DIRECTLY BUT THROUGH SQLNET .

3. Use "ORACLE ODBC test" in order to test if your "datasource name"
   is correct.

4. Try to connect using PHP

THE PROBLEM IS THAT YOU SHOULD UNDERSTANT HOW TO SETUP THE DSN (read the previous topic)

You've been a huge help. Thanks. I had basically already done what you suggested in your mail. I tried again and it still didn't work.

My short-term solution is to roll back to php3, where the Oracle ODBC connection seems to work fine.

As a long-term solution, I'd like follow your suggestion about the Oracle dlls. Do you know where I can download them? Or can I use the ones included in the PHP3 installation?

I am having similarproblem - is anyone figured out how to configure the ODBS correctly? Same "SQL state IM002 in SQLConnect" error I am getting on PHP 3, IIS5, Access97 db. I have seen many questions about it but no good answers.

Have you made sure that you added the database to the system DSN rather than the user DSN? I was encountering this error and found this to be the cause of the problem for me.

Finally , have you the solution ?
I've the same problem with PHP4 and Oracle 8 for the odbc_connect function.
It's ok when i work with an access2000 database but not with an oracle8 database.

Is it not a php4 bug ?
For me , it works fine with access , but not with oracle.
