GD Library?? ImageMagick?? Help!!

I need to create an application that will take uploaded image files and then resize them and write them to disk, as well as their links to a MySQL Table.

My question right now concerns the capabilities of the GD library and how to go about the image processing. It seems GD only works with GIF files or PNG files.. is this true? Are there any limitations on PNG files as far as displaying them in the browser is concerned? I have also looked at ImageMagick as a possibility but would like to hear from anyone who has expereince in this area.

I need to be able to upload both GIF and/or JPG files to this application.

I am in the same situation as you... What you are after is almost exactly what I was planning on making (or finding)... The reason I would like to setup such a system is so that I can post pictures (via a web page) from my digital camera while I am travelling overseas.

I have seen a few snippets here and there on the subject of image resizing etc but nothing that has a MySQL component included. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to build that in though... Getting back to the image functions and Imagemagick - there seems to be a (comparitive) lack of resources out there on this topic... I must admit I need to search further but so far I haven't come up with that much so far.

If anyone out there has any functions/code snippets that they are willing to share I'd be very greatful... 🙂

The GD routines do support jpegs; the version number required to get jpeg support is documented on www.php.net:

Go with ImageMagick-5.2.2

It is my understanding that GD does not support true color jpeg and therefore not photos.

I just had someone help me install Imagemagick on my ISP and it ate up a lot of disk space (25meg) so I'll try to get rid of stuff I don't need.

I ran ./mogrify and it create a nice thumbnail.

I'm working on the php code now.

That's my opinion.

I recently came across a neat PHP script that uses GD and another library (JPEG lib) to create thumbnails and add comments to the actual image file...

It looks really neat but I haven't had a chance to test drive it yet

I'm just having trouble compiling gd. This sucks when you're on an ISP and you don't know unix.

GD seems to be a bit tricky to compile (I'm still waiting on the sys admin to do that for me...). Also its a real pain about the .gif licence and GD 🙁

Anyway, I hope I can get this up and running soon cause I have heaps of photos...

PS: I find www.hotscripts.com to be a great resource for PHP related stuff....

My problem is I don't know Unix and can't get a program to run from a PHP script. My error is:

../cgi-bin/jpgtn-1.04/jpgtn: can't load library 'libjpeg.so' when I use passthru()

I got the same thing when I worked with ImageMagick. I don't understand the library loading.

Also, when I move jpgtn to another directory I get a permission denied when I try to run it.

But this little app looks good.
