PHP web host with excellent speed?

I went back through the last month's posts, and any mention of PHP web hosting was about free web hosting.

Can I hear suggestions for something a little higher-end? I want to work with PHP4, not some outdated PHP3 server. I have my own domain name. I want to custom-config the PHP stuff to parse .xhtml file extensions. And I'll need about 100 megs of space by the end of the year.

Also, I'm really concerned about speed and responsiveness. I will only have 1 image on my Web pages, and make as few calls to the database as possible. A fast server would be worth $150/month to me. I'd maybe go up to $250/month if the service was outstanding.

Wow....at $250 a month you could just about buy one!

Have a look at tophosts.com they have a very big list of hosting companies....and most of them configurable!

Try highspeedweb.net. I've got a leased dedicated server with them, running linux. It's only $199/month. You can install whatever software you like on it. Although it's a PII 350 Mhz, performance is quite good; you don't have to share it with hundreds of other virtual servers. They have better boxes, but a bit more expensive.

They also do hosting, talk to them to find out what they can give you. They are always available through irc, icq, email or phone. Excellent support!

I wholeheartedly recommend Vservers.com. They have virtual unix accounts with about 100 meg for abot $99/mo.

They are virtual unix accounts so you can load up whetever you want. They make it easy by having a web based installation process for some of the more common server tools, this includes mySql and PHP.

Their connection is VERY fast and their servers are scrupulously maintained... the best is that you get a live human when you call tech support.

We have been using them for over a year. We switched to them after our previous ISP withered on the vine.

I currently use, www.Helpzone.com I was a bit us sure about using them at first because of there website (not the best) but I went ahead because of a recommendation from a friend, and so far (4 months) all looks good Fast tech support & servers. They also have php4 & mysql which I use very often.

I have to agree they are pretty good.
They offer good support, maintenance and regular upgrades on all their servers.

And to answer your question about php4.0
Yes, they just upgraded to it within the last few weeks.

As far as the pricing goes, it's better than what the other person stated, I have a 250meg virtual server for 95.00 a month

They do offer dedicated hosting, and a number of choices for platform, OS and HardWare configurations.

Being the happy camper that I am with them, I plan on sticking with them for a while.

As far as who NOT to host with....
I have to say Verio is your worst bet, they suck hard, I had a client that was paying 160.00 for 150megs with perl5.02 (this was 3mos ago!) and no way to upgrade (since the x11 lib's were only accessible as root) And of course, their solution was, "spend more for a newer virtual server (their new freeBSD servers) upgrade or rot"... in not so many words, but it's basicly what they said : ]

Thanks guys. I decided to go with vservers.com. I moved a couple domains over there just an hour ago.

The servers aren't online yet, but I'm happy so far. I called because I had questions, and the Sales person I talked to offered to waive setup fees. That was nice.

The virtual server I got has a nice control panel that will allow me to add MySQL and PHP (4, I hope, but if the control panel can't do it I'll do it myself).

In a very obscure popup window I found that there is a bandwidth limit, about 4 GB/month for the "lite" and about 8 GB/month for the "pro" versions. That isn't the best, but it'll get my feet wet. The sales person (Raymond Hoss) assured me that migration to a semi-dedicated and then a fully dedicated server would be fairly painless, so I'm not overly concerned about growth.

It appears that vservers.com is actually just an arm of hostpro.com....

I run www.php4hosting.com although the bandwidth is restricted on most accounts the aim is for people wanting to develop MySQL/php without paying a high price.

However next month we will be releasing a new service for resellers, $48 a month for 5Gigs and 300Mb of space. Its aimed so people can resell but there is no reason that people can't just use it for their own sites.

We can also offer dedicated servers with bandwidth limits starting at 25Gigs a month.

I saw these guys offering 125 mb for 10$ a month.
When I saw the numbers you are all talking about like 100$ a month, I felt like there could be something wrong with this company ,
