changing extensions

i'm wondering what i need to do in my .htaccess in order to allow .php to work instead or along with the .php3 my hosting company has set up. its a bit annoying putting in .php3 and then find after 1,000 pages i have to change to .php4 or .php to get the benefits of php 4.

if someone has done this could you let me know what i need to change? thanks!

you should be able to add:

AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php

to your .htaccess file and it should work.

i tried that.. but instead of just opening the document with the .php extension it asks me where i want to download the document.
