I noticed that at home on my 112kbit connection PHPbuilder can be slow sometimes when displaying to help lists. The browser says opening ... and then it still takes up to 20 seconds sometimes. Now I thought it was the DB that was taking its time to get all the message headers.
A regular page, say a column, displayes much quicker (up to 10 times) for me, I thought the reason was because it only needs to fetch one row from the db.

But at work (I don't know what the connection is but I can get up to 600 kb/s at times) all pages are displayed almost instantly. So it can't be the db that is slow, because heavy pages take just as much time as light pages.

Anyone knows what this is??

Speed has to do with connection. Every point accessible in the internet must be connected to a backbone. These backbones are connected together more or less good. It depends on what backbone your ISP at home is using and how this one is connected to a backbone phpbuilder.com is connected.

Try in a "ms dos command window":

tracert www.phpbuilder.com

(at home AND in the office!)

You will get a list of hops through which your request to phpbuilder.com is beeing connected. The less you have, the faster your connection is...

Hmm...
Not necessarily so. It depends on many more factors than only the numbers of hops between you and the server. Among other things, the speed also depends on your bandwidth, the number of drops on the different routers, is the route symmetrical or not, the response time of the routers etc...

In essence, the important thing is that the faster a packet gets sent through from the server to you and from you to the server, the better your connection will be.

But this is hardly the place fro such discussions, I guess a network related newsgroup would be better 😉
