how is LDAP implemented?

Hello guys
I am currently involved in a system which has to keep track of user's information and their access right to multiple files. The system is expected to have 10,000 users with 10,000 files. This information and user's rights are stored in MySQL. Although it's possible, but I am a little concern with the performance.

LDAP seems to be keeping information in a tree stucture. How is LDAP performance? (ok, I admit I a little newbie) How is LDAP implemented? (anyone can suggest good reading sites?)

I struggled through this some time back trying to understand what LDAP was and how it was supposed to be used. I managed to get a pretty good PHP routine that authenticated against our LDAP server (It was VERY site specific).

LDAP appeared to me to be just a very structured database. I did not perform speed benchmarks but I doubt it would match the speed of MySQL. I recommend reading the Netscape SDK for examples that you can adjust into PHP fairly easily.
