Enlarging thumbnails to its own page

I have a page with 8 thumbnails:

All I want to do is to be able to have the user click on one of the thumbnails and it would generate a larger image in another page.

Any help?

I used a perl method, its not automate other then to create the HTML from a telnet command line.

It looks at the fullsize directorys and creates a page based on the picture name, it also creates links backwards and forwards and reads in a text file for descriptions.
An example can be seen at :-

We use acdsee to create the text file containing the descriptions, upload the pictures (Thumbs are created using Thumbnailer) and then i run the script.

If this method is suitable please let me know

The example you pointed me to is exactly what I want to do....but I have know idea what you're telling me in your previous message. I'm not very familiar w/ perl

Ok, its all very simple. You need telnet/perl access with your host. Providing you have these the script will work.
I first rename the pictures using Rename-it
(http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/online/212/rname-it.zip)

I then use Thumbnailer from www.smalleranimals.com
This will create the thumbnails

I also use acdsee www.acdsee.com, this is an image viewer (A good one at that) it allows you to store descriptions about pictures, it stores them in a file called descript.ion that is hidden in the picture directory.

I upload the thumbs/fullsize pictures with the descipt.ion file

I then run the script from the linux command line, and all the html is created.

It needs some editing for the header/footer of the html but its very easy.

You know how in a php form, you assign a variable to a field (i.e. <input type="text" name="varA">) then based on what they put in there, you setup an action page (i.e. "action.phtml") and in the action page you can echo the users input to fall into the action.phtml page. Is this not possible to do w/ images?

You could use the images linked with the picture number etc.. and get it displayed on that.

I created this method long before I knew about PHP and to be honest its easier then writting new code to process the pictures.

But yes you could do a simlar thing in PHP

You know you could easily whip up a PHP version without needing telnet, etc.

All you would need to do is have a page that displays the entire contents of a directory (that contains all the thumbnails) in a nicely formatted table.

Then each image would be a link with a variable on the end of it like <a href="showpic.php3?ID=1"><img src="1.jpg"></a>

Then in your next page you could have the script open a text file from another set directory that has the same name as the image ("1.txt) which would contain a description, etc.. and then have it displayed next to the large version of the image....which would have also been found from the $ID field in the url.

Plus its handy if you webhost doesn't support php 🙂

But yes it would be easy to use php

Its a great program isn't it 🙂

I registered it over 2 years ago and haven't looked back!

Yeah...fair enough mate.

As it turns out it's not what I was thinking of.....I was thinking that it shows images as resampled thumbnails by reading a directory and doing it's stuff........not something that actually creates the thumbnails that take up disk space.

Any ideas of something that does this?

Kinda like altavista does when you serach for images...

Someone told me about a program called thumbs.sh but I never got it to work, the servers were lacking something to get it to work and I never looked any more at it.

Its not great I know 🙂

But it works this end, I have only ran it from the command line, not looked at getting it to use a cgi method.

It wouldn't run on slackware4 though maybe there isnt something included in that so try it first
