Sessions and Shopping Carts

I am developing a simple shopping cart application.

At the moment, I don't use sessions, I store the cart content in a cookie (Hash ref).

The thing is a lot of people (& Applications) seem to use sessions to authenticate, track & even record items for a user.

Other than enabling users with no cookies to use the site, can anyone give me a reason to switch to sessions??

Sessions do use cookies. They just make it easier and provide ways of handling users who don't have cookies enabled.

There are no reasons to change from sessions to cookies in my opinion. :-)

To clarify - I am using cookies at the moment and am looking for a justifiable reason to switch to sessions (it isn't too late in the development stage).

Since sessions use cookies, wouldn't this cause problems for users that do not have their browsers enabled for accepting persistent or temporary cookies?

you should use sessions because there is a limit on the size of a cookie ..

also.. there are other ways to maintain state with sessions other than using cookies.
