Hi guys,

i was thinking on creating a login form for more than 1 type of user, whats the better way on doing it? i have checked older post etc etc and it seems that most people prefer on using cookies?

i've done this type of thing in multiple ways, but his i found works well for me. Say you have 3 types of users: administrator, moderator, and user. First add 2 additional columns to the table where your users are stored, they should be something like: is_admin, is_mod. In your PHP code, if you user is an administrator, they are automatically a moderator and a user, if a user is a moderator they are a moderator and user... this is useful if you want to have a user log into different sections of a application, say a administration interface as apposed to the user interface. Say you have a username of bob, logging in as bob will bring them to the user interface, logging in as mod_bob will bring them to the moderation interface, and logging in as admin_bob will bring them to the administration interface. All you need to do is to parse the string for either admin or mod and if you find admin_ run the admin checker to see if the user is an administrator, and the same for moderator.

Or you can add 1 column such as user_type and have it either set as user, mod, admin, etc.. and echo different code depending on the setting if you want everyone to go to one interface and have different options... hope this helps -g

yes i actually do combine php and mysql together at the moment.

and btw, do you know a good tutorial site for java scripts which teach us how to write instead of just copy and paste?

Well if you are looking for a javascript documentation, whichis indeed the best way to start off with javascript, then netscape.com is your choice.

I would reccomend, that you implement a sysztem similar to what Gerrit wrote. I would, however, create three tables

1 User
2 Moderator
3 Admin

Upon login I would create a drop down box which asks

are you: user, moderator, admin ?

The drop down box actually only verifies which table you wish to look data up in

Then you simply look up if Username && passwort exist in the database.

It is important, that you md5(pass) the passwort.
