keeping track of link hits

Hi,
I've seen on another php discussion site where it lists code that people provide and the number of viewers. My question is: how does php keep track of the link hits? I figured with javascript, using onClick is simple and fast. But how would I accomplish this using php? Hope someone can help. Thanks!

Uhm.. read the columns section, it has a few nice bits about logging use activity.
