How to create a gz file with multi-file

i wanna to compress seveal local files to a gz/zip file using php.
Is it possible? If yes, how?

To create a .tar.gz file :

tar czf file.tar.gz /home/dir/toarchive

To uncompress this tar.gz file :

tar xfvz file.tar.gz

and one download resource didn't work for php 4

what is a proven way for php 4 to turn a directory you specify into a zip file?

Nobody I know has this answer, but it seems it's basic
