compress/uncompress

Hi,

I'm storing files in a database but to save place, I'd like to compress/uncompress them before/after storing them.

IDK what you want to do but :

To Dump a database :
mysqldump -uUsername -p dbname > dbname.sql

To create a .tar.gz file :
tar czf file.tar.gz dbname.sql

To uncompress this tar.gz file :
tar xfvz file.tar.gz

To import back into DB :
mysql -uUsername -p dbname < dbname.sql

If you're wanting to run a compressed database to save space, you can't, it already does this, basically.

You can compress strings on-the-fly before inserting it into your DB by using the gzcompress function from the zlib library.( uncompress with gzuncompress )

// Compress
$value=gzcompress($string);
...
// insert $value
...

// Uncompress
...
// Extract value fomr DB
...
$string=gzuncompress($value);

You'll need to add support for the zlib in PHP.

If zlib support is not enabled you can use the external gzip program .

//Compress
// use the backtick operator
// -f to force output to stdout
$value=echo "$string" | gzip -f

// Uncompress
$string=echo "$value" | gzip -df

oic, very interesting, that's a good little tidbit of knowledge.

to build off this and my earlier post (which as it seems, has very little to do with the question on hand) :

One-step Compressed dump :
mysqldump -uUsername -p dbname | gzip > dbname.gz

Decompress / restore:
gunzip < dbname.gz | mysql -uUsername -p dbname

Again, this is unrelated but jic someone searches these mailing lists in the future, this will give a little more meaning to my earlier post as it relates to quickly compressing dbs.
