Zend Question

<Dumb question> If I'm using php >= 4, does this mean that I'm automatically using zend, or do I have do do something special to activate zend? I always thought that the templates I create would be compiled.</Dumb Question>

The Zend engine is enabled by default.
The Zend Optimizer needs to be installed by you seperately.

what does the Zend Optimizer do that the Zend engine doesn't. Is the Zend engine useless without the Optimizer?

The Zend optimizer does what the mane says, it tries to optimize your code before it is finally executed.

Look at it this way,
The Zend Engine makes the data to be outputted.

Zend Optimizer passes over it 2-8 times to optimize it to it's smallest-fastest format.

Understand?

For real - Install the optimizer. Under 0% load I SWEAR I can see the difference.
