Writing & ebugging PHP without a server

Hi,

I really liked PHP and will maybe "upgrade" from Perl. However, there are reasons why I would prefer writing and debugging PHP scripts at home (we have very slow Internet and I can't work on sats/suns, which drives me up the wall).

Is there a PHP compiler (or interpreter?) that could work on my Win98 machine, emulate server use and let me work on high-level database/HTML related problems which do not in fact require Internet access?

Well maybe I want too much or do not understand something really important about PHP... but I will be grateful for any help!

You can easily download a copy of Apache or use PWS for win98 and set up a local server on win98. I have Apache / PHP4 / MySQl on my local computer and I can develop and test all day long without ever having to put my scripts on a remote server. There is also OpenSA which is a precompiled Apache with built in PHP support as a module for Win9x/NT/2000. Their web site has been down for a while but there's a mirror:

I find OpenSA MUCH MUCH faster and more stable for my local PHP development than with IIS or PWS (especially on this memory-limited machine), and not to mention a lot smaller download. Installation is quite easy.

If I were you, I'd set up a local HTTPd server (I reccommend OmniHTTPd) and test everything using 127.0.0.1 =)

Or. If you asked really nicely I could probably jump into safe mode and let you develop on mine, I run a PHP 4+ webserver.
