PHP vs ASP

Hi, I'm endeavouring to teach myself PHP at the moment. One of the reasons is to increase my employment options.

I was looking in the jobs section in the newspaper the other day and was struck by how much ASP skills are in demand compared to PHP.

I'm under the impression that PHP is a superior language compared to ASP for various reasons such as platform independence, etc.

Is this job demand due simply to ASP being around longer or is there something I'm missing here?

I have to say there is a learning curve... People are stubborn. It takes some time for new and upcoming things to become prevalent. If you show an ASP programmer PHP, the reaction is always the same... WOW... =)

Give it time. Learn PHP. If you have the option of doing either PHP or ASP on a project, it will make you that much more flexible, powerful, and desired as an employee.

There are several reasons to pick ASP over PHP

ASP is better if you want to stick to the windows NT / 2000 platform.

since there are still a lot of company's that are sticking to these servers
there will always be market for ASP programmers.

A small warning though, ASP is about to change drasticly so this is not a very good time to start learning ASP.

Also a very important thing is that the development time of ASP websites are shorter
than there PHP counterparts because of the simplicity of ASP.

I think the job demand is more important in the asp field because of the fact that ususally suits and other kind of corportate people are definitively not geek 🙂

They are looking for being in the hype, want to handle new technologies and thinks that solutions that comes from established society as microsoft are the securest one.

But this is corporate problems, not yours 🙂

The need for technological skill in business is so strong there is no problem choosing the right job for the right skill you have.

Just work with the people that let you use the tools you like, and let the other discover by expérience that proprietary solutions are not the one that will stay.

This is just my opinion, agree with it or not, it s up to you 🙂

i have worked on both technologies,

if you once start doing PHP you don't like to work in ASP.
PHP is younger and mainly runs on linux and apache with mysql.

In India most of the companies are stick to the microsoft technologies.

The worst thing for PHP is that it is not promoted by neither microsoft nor sun(big giants).

so most of companies are stick to either
ASP of microsoft and java of sun.

But there are more PHP development jobs than there are PHP developers (at least here in the UK there are). Which means developers are always in demand and thus get paid ALOT.

Give me PHP over ASP anyday.. ASP can stay in its little NT Microsoft Elitist world and the rest of the Universe can use PHP and do much better.

The real way most developers get hired is by personal networking, not by want ads. It stands to reason then that if someone is placing an ad for a developer of some language, then their personal networking doesn't expose them to enough developers of that language.

If I need a good C, Perl, Java, or PHP developer, I ask friends who they recommend. Interviewing for a developer job just leaves so much to chance. People can often come off as knowing much more or less than they really do.

So my guess is that most PHP developers are already hired somewhere, having been hired to do something else before PHP like PERL or C or ASP. So, the first 5 or 10 people to develop in PHP at a company are gonna already work there, not get hired cold by a want ad. The next 10 or so will be networking referrals, then you might start to see some ads.

actually there are hidden jobs for PHP developers as most of the companies are shifting their programmers into php without
giving adds.
In delhi(India) i rarely seen any PHP add. but still some companies are using
php.
my company is totally in php but they had never given the adds for php developer.
In India now ASP is loosing its market to JSP and PHP.

but it's true that php is still far less
popular .Last year php is declared as future scripting language.

ASP is a Microsoft "baby". If you think the world will remain a Microsoft domain, then write code in ASP and "live long and prosper". If you think that Microsoft dominance is fading, get on the newer bandwagon. My personal preference is PHP ... and the relative dominance of Microsoft is just one of many reasons for this. In balance, I think PHP to be a better way to code. It's that simple.
