update an existing php installation

hello

i'm running a webserver here, with apache/perl/ssl/php+mysql+sybase+imap+others... it's running php4.0.1pl2, now is there an easy way to update php4 without causing apache to be down for a long period and without recompiling apache/perl/ssl? i've been searching through the manuals/mailinglists and so on, but haven't found anything usefull to this topic..

I'm fairly sure you'll have to recompile it. If you know that all your code works with 4.0 you can just recompile Apache with PHP 4 and then restart the webserver. You could swap and only be down for a few seconds. That's if everything works. If you're doing anything serious you should have a testing machine to get everything working right.
