401 Authentication

Hi, I'm planning to restrict access to certain sections of my website. As i was lazy to implement sessions or cookie-based, i decided to use the HTTP (401) authentication in PHP, i.e. pop-up a login box to the user. My question is: can the username and password (that are sent to the server) encrypted on SSL too?

If they are sent to an HTTPS based server that supports 128bit encoding then yes, everything is encoded, at least as far as any documentation I can find is.
