call a client-programm from php programm

Hi,
knows every that is possible to call a client-programm e.g winword or staroffice etc.. from a php-programm???
What will i do?
i call a html-site that was generate from php, the site is a list of documentes, (graphic , text etc..), now i will load the document with the programm that i have install on the client, but if it is possible i will not use the mime types, because we have a lot of platforms.
The Path of the application that i will call on the client , is admits

so somebody have a idea ?? let know ;-))

I do not think that php can do this for you client side - if you have a link - say blah.doc - then more than likely the clients browser will pass that to MS word- or its accociated application on the client side, this would also work for .xls etc - the only other way I know is to use active-x controls - but you probably need javascript/vbscript to work those - assuming of course that the client has the accociated application on thier machine.
