How to use PHP to get data from a MySQL database?

Hi,

I'm a university student in Hungary, and I need to do a school project using PHP. I have a problem, namely that I've NEVER used PHP before, so I don't have the foggiest idea how it works exactly. There is an already existing MySQL database of the computers used at our university. I have to make it possible for the users to report on different problems occuring while working with the computer through a web-interface. They have to give their e-mail address, the ID of the computer, the exact time and date, and the description of the problem encountered. All this information should be forwarded directly to the operators or stored until an operator cheks for problems through a web-interface. As I've never used PHP before I'd appreciate any kind of help, advice or anything you can come up with. Thanks for your efforts and patience!

This is a reference for all of the mysql functions and examples of their use. Plenty of help is contained online.
