First off, I am so new to this, I shine with ignorance.
I recently decided to get hosted for a site I want to create, and this site will use Phorum.org's forum software.
I am looking for a guide that makes sense for someone that is delving into this.
For those interested in telling me where to get informaion, please send email. I am very technically able when I have the right tools.
For those that wish to offer instant insight...
I am using FreeBSD Apache server with FontPage 2000 support.
I have my full ftp or telnet access (telnet is a horror for me, but will learn if need be - should have retained that from college).
I read the security and readme files associated with forum, and it seems that there is something lost in the translation.
If someone would like to offer me direct council, I will do so with the information they ask (I would like to make site secure, so that is of importance - the names will be changed to protect the innocent).
I cannot telnet from my main pc at work, but I can ftp since its port 21.
I do have access to a second telephone line, but the connection to the laptop I can use is very slow, but functional.
the tree structure i am working with is as close to the following
-bin(empty)
-mysite
L-cgi-bin
L-etc
L-logs(error and access log)
L-docs
***L_private
L_vti_bin(vti_admin and vti_aut)
L_vti_cnf(index.htm)
L_vti_log
L_vti_private(.cnf, .btr, and .lck)
L_vti.txt
Limages
***Lsitestats
the rest are the html files for the site.
one of my question stems from (which would help me understand quite a bit):
1) Move the configuration files outside the web tree, for example into your user directory. (meaning one of the 'hidden' folders like _private?)
If I create a folder, I am chmod 707 it. Uhh...
anyway, this is why I would like a good tech reference to read, and to be able to do what it says that I'm learning to do. Please contact the ignorant. It's their only way to become... learned.
