echo versus print

I'd like to get some feedback from the user community on the merits of using:

echo "some text here";

versus

print ("some text here");

Specifically, what speed differences exist between using either method to display text, and why there are differences in the first place.

I've always wondered, besides the obvious formatting ability of printf();, what other benefits there are in using either method?
