Writing a full path to file

Hi,
I hope this question hasnt been posted before.
Here is my problem... how would I write a complete URL path to file. eg. http://www.blah.com/blah/blah2/index.html is the file that I want to retreive and write it to the local system with full paths.. ie. /blah/blah2/index.html

The only way I can think of doing it is stripping the http://www.blah.com part, then somehow writing /blah/blah2/index.html to the local filesystem. Is there a php function that can write a complete path PLUS the file at the same time? Or would I have to strip the blah and blah2, make the directories then write index.html ?

Does this question make any sense?

When looking at a URL like yours:

  http://www.blah.com/blah/blah2/index.html

the actual storage location is relative to the DOCUMENT_ROOT
of the file server. That is, take off the server name (e.g.
www.blah.com) and everything else just gets appended to the
$DOCUMENT_ROOT value and now you have your absolute
pathname in the machine's filesystem.
