mail() fault

Dudes/dudettes, I'm having a weird problem with mail().

Doing something simple like...

mail("[e-mail]", "test", "test");

returns false.

But, the bizarre thing is that this was working yesterday, and no exim configurations or PHP configurations have been changed.

I've had 16 e-mails in the last 5 hours from people saying they can't register on my site all with different hosts, and exim has been delivering mail during this time.

I've tried doing a popen() to exim, but nothing happens. Doing a trace with lots of printf()'s shows it seems to stop executing when it gets to the popen() call.

Does anyone have any suggestions to this rather desperate problem? Is something wrong in exim? Or php.ini? The machine has been up for over 18 days.. perhaps this could be the reason 🙂

I have heard that on some platforms the mail() function requires all 4 parameters to work...regardless of whether or not they are used.
ie: Mail("to","subject","message","from:");
