caching (php vs. ssi)

A good argument for keeping pages in ssi (.shtml) is the fact that they are cached by apache.

Is it possible do the same with php?

We have lots of includes but they don't change that often so it would be cool if apache could cache the file.

I want to move the site from ssi to php, but performance is important.

I don't think you are correct. I see no evidence in the mod_include source code to suggest that Apache caches shtml pages, and it wouldn't make sense to do so -- too many dependencies to track. If it did cache a page, it would still have to scan the html for include directives and determine whether any of them referred to content that might have changed or directives that by definition are uncacheable (date, #exec cgi, et cetera).
