Newbie to sessions

I have a colour preference system working perfectly on my page, where users can set their preferences and stuff. Problem is, when you close your browser, and reopen, setting are reset. Is there anyway to save the session permanently?

I do not want to resort to user logins, because it defeats the purpose of small customizations by making things complicated.

I think you can use cookies to do that.

If you use a cookie to do that make sure you don't set the cookie to expire otherwise by default the cookie will expire once an user exists the browser.
