Hi,
I have the same problem with my linux, I also followed the steps you mentioned with no success. How did you resolve this problem??
Thanks

Probably not the best of forums for this, but the people here some to know what they're talking about:
For no apparent reason, I can no longer log into Linux (Redhat 6.2). I have made no installation, or changes that I think could possibly affect this. I can STILL FTP, but I cannot login remotely or locally as a root or non-root user.
The passwords seem to be fine (login via ftp without trouble). I have also gone into linux single mode and changed the password (again, without trouble). I just cannot login. I get "Incorrect Login".
Here is a sample from /var/log/messages :
Oct 31 13:33:56 freedom login[890]: FAILED LOGIN SESSION FROM (null) FOR root, Error in service module
Oct 31 13:34:05 freedom login: FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM (null) FOR shining, Authentication failure
