Generating Christmas cards with php

Hi - I have the following problem and any suggestions on how to solve it would be greatfully recieved...

The company that I work for would like to send electronic christmas cards and donate the money saved to charity. Great - but they want me to find a solution. So I was considering using php to allow users to go through a intranet based application that ask them for the details of who to send the card to, message, email address etc. The final product would be a nicely formatted email with an attached 'card' (complete no additional access to the internet required). The format of the 'card' should be viewable without the need for additional apps, but something like a pdf would be acceptable.

Is this something that can be done this way? Can you attach files to emails using php? Is there anything out there already that I could adapt? what format do think the 'card' should be in?

Your cards could just be HTML formatted email. There are several classes that you can use to generate HTML Mail from php. My favorite is one from Richard Heyes. Check out:

Or if you wanted a nice picture card, you could use the GD functions to alter a gif or jpeg which you have created. This would allow you to add the recipient nams and stuff onto a card on the fly from the details someone enters.
