Apache Bench Documentation

Does anybody know where I can find some documentation for the Apache Bench or ab application. (I tried the obvious Apache web sites and a number of other web searches, lots of references but nothing points to any documentation).

If not can anybody recommend some other open source or free software for stress testing an Apache, PHP, Mysql based web site.

Try the microsoft tool if you are on a Windows box for a workstation. It works with any kind of site (IIS, Apache, etc). It works excellent (and is much nicer than ab). You just open your browser, surf a bit on your site, and it will record what you do (cookies and all). Then start it up and it will do the same thing you did when surfing with a configurable number of client threads, etc.

The website for it contains lots of documentation and other resources. Oh, and it is also free 🙂

Dear John,

WAS seems to work only for applications residing on IIS webservers on WIN NT or WIN 2000 m/c\'s.
Does it really work for Apache web servers ?

Do let me know ASAP. The web site seems to say that it is only applicable to IIS web servers.
