It may sound really really stupid, but do I need to set up mySQl or another database, or does my host? Or do I just not make any sense?

To use PHP you do not require the use of a database.

However, if you would like to use PHP to its full, it would make life easier if you used a database.

Your host would need to alter the webserver if you were to use MySQL

Setting up Apache, PHP and mySQL on your system using loop back makes the development process a whole lot easier. It might seem like a big under taking to someone who has never been exposed to any of these apps before but there are plenty of step-by-step guides on the net and you can even get them running on a wintel box if linux ain't your bag.

Generally, the host will handle the installation of a database server, like mySQL, if they decide to offer it. They will also most likely handle the creation of your database (setting it up with a name, user name, and password), but you may have to import the tables yourself.

But why not just ask your host? Don't worry about sounding stupid. I'm sure that compared to a lot of questions they get, yours sounds absolutely brilliant.
