Running a program in back ground

Hi,
By any chance, is it possible to run a program in the back ground when u r using php, apache and linux. What i need is a program that will keep on running on back ground that will be capeable of creating and modifying the records in your databse. At the same time this program should NOT effect the access to other pages..Some thing like a TSR

Just try with cron or if you are inrested to make like TSR do it with thread Api..I DON'T know about such API or modules interface with PHP....
