php4 sessions

the root of my site is index.php with 2 frames : right.php3 and left.php3

(i know i wrote .ph3 but it's really a php4 script with the serverside trio php4/apache/mysql)

when i try to load a new session at the beginning of right.php3 with the session_start(); command i've got the following error:

Warning: Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent (output started at /Library/WebServer/Documents/rdv63/right.php3:1) in /Library/WebServer/Documents/rdv63/right.php3 on line 1

IS there anybody here able to help me please

Question of the day, number 14:

Headers should always be the first output of your script. That means that cookies, session_start and header() commands should be executed before you print anything.

As this error is on line 1, my gues is there is an empty line or a space before the <? tag.

you have to write this :
<?session_start();

and not
<?
session_start();

because the second choice means you start the edition of the page before starting session.

You can put as many empty line inside your PHP block as you like.
Empty PHP lines do not generate output.
Empty lines OUTSIDE the PHP block do generate output.
so hits:

-- start of php script
(empty line here)
<?
session_start();
?>
-- end of PHP script

would generate a header error.
