Cannot start Apache Server

I am having difficulties starting my Apache server. I already installed Apache 1.3.14, when I type /etc/rd.d./init.d/httpd start and get an error message : starting httpd:execvp : no such file or directory.
What is the execvp? How can I fix this problem and can get Apache working?

I appreciate any help you can give me.

The path to apachectl in that script is wrong. I'd edit it and set the path correctly.

Thanks for the advice but I am still stuck.

My httpd.conf, srm.conf,access.conf files are under /etc/httpd/conf, does this mean I should start Apache under that directory? I tried to start under those directories but unfortunately it did not work. What is the command to make Apache start?

You were right Melinda, I assume that you installed a redhat RPM or your dist of Redhat had apache in it. you were doing it the right way maybe httpd start

I deleted all previous Apache files and went through the installation process again with instructions from http://apachetoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2000-06-1-001-01-NW-DP-LF#checklist

These instructions worked perfectly. Apache 1.3.14 is now installed.

mkay had the same problem but I found that there is only I minor clich in the http shell script itself.... locate "daemon httpd -DSSL" in the /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd and change the httpd value so that it reads the full path... in my case "daemon /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL"

@least this was my problem....

I also had a problem similar to this... what it ended up being was also a bad path to the httpd binary. It was listed under /usr/sbin/httpd in the script, but was actually located in /usr/bin/httpd.
Just thought I'd add my .02¢ to the discussion.
