Host '' cannot connect to mySQL server

I'm trying to connect to a remote mySQL host and each time I try, I get the message listed in the subject. I've read the documentation numerous time and as a result I set up a userid/password on the remote server specifing the server I'm trying to connect from.

However when I change the host name from "localhost" to the remote host name, it always comes back as empty. Even when I've hard-coded the host name or IP address into the pconnect function call.

Its like the machine attempting to connect can't even see the remote host and therefore doesn't know where I'm trying to connect.

I'm beginning to suspect that there's an option missing somewhere on the server I'm trying to connect from that is preventing me from connecting to the remote host, but I can't be sure. I'm in a crunch so any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

this hsould get you started:
make sure that mysql is running on the remote box, and that you can login at the command line on that box.
also make sure you can ping that box from your web server.
you might also have a network admin make sure there are no ports being block that mysql is trying to run on.

I'm having a similar problem, though I'm not sure if it is related

I'm trying to connect to another computer running MySQL. Its running fine and there are no firewalls etc between the machines.

When I try..

mysql -h computername -u root -p

..and type in the password it keeps reverting back to the name of the local machine not what I specified in the host..

Perhaps I'm doing something silly and missing it, but shouldn't this work?
