Removing space

Does anyone know how to remove white space in php (without removing the spaces which occur in text etc)???? To get a document that looks like this;

<A href="#1">
Lampard denies quit

                             </A>

to this???

<A href="#1">Lampard denies quit talk</A>

I've tried various different configurations similar to this but can't get it to work:

$printing[1] = ereg_replace([:space:], "", $printing[1]);

So for my example I would simply put

trim($printing[1]). RTFM

Sorry, I guess RTFM is making a reference to the manual!!

I've looked at the manual and it not very explanitory for someone who has been doing php for 4 days!!

Could some one put it into context of this code:

$printing[1] = str_replace($From[$i], "$To[$i]", $printing[1]);
$printing[1] = trim ($printing[1]); //This is not working????????????

trim() removes leading and trailing spaces. I dont know if this will work, but i have used it from a form post. try...

$printing[1] = eregi("\r\n", " ", $printing[1]);

It should put everything on one line at least. If not, than I aint got a clue.

Well this method will leave at least not more then 2 spaces following by each-other, anyway, hope this will help:
$printing[1]=ereg_replace(" ","",$printing[1]);

That'sa pretty dubm, yeah? 🙂

At the end of the print sentense code in PHP, you can add the \n (new line)...

print("what to print...\n");
print("\n");

...

I just spent 1.5hrs on this. Damn.

To condense all groups of white space (newlines, carriage returns, tabs, form feeds, and spaces) into a single space, the following line should work...

$condensed=ereg_replace("[\n|\r|\t|\f| ]+", " ", $long_string);

Is that what you were after? I don't know if this is in the fsckin manual ;⁾ but something similar is in Professional PHP Programming (Wrox impress) pg 189/190. Hope you've already solved this. Post your outcome?

Hi, Well I came up with a much simple solution which seems to work.

$printing[1] = eregi_replace("[[:space:]][[:space:]]", "", $printing[1]);

This removes all double spaces, so you get the occasional single space left in you don't want, but it takes out most of it.

I prefer Donal solution because
when you remove all double space you merge all tokens thats are seperated by an even amount off spaces. Or am I talking error?

so use:
$condensed=ereg_replace("[\n|\r|\t|\f| ]+", " ", $long_string);
