Database Refresh

Hello all,

Ok this is my new problem. I have a script that querys a Mysql database and creates and html output doc. fine works wonderfully. Problem: when the user goes on to another page and then uses the back button to go back to the page created by the database it needs to be refreshed by the client.(I am assuming it needs to repost the form data.) Is there any way to fix this?

I would guess that he's using the "Back" button in his browser ?

In that case, the browser is probably pointing back towards a script-generated URL, dbcreate.php?=whatever.doc or something similiar.

Anyhow, you could create a "Back" button on the next page, with the a href="<? code-to-generated-html ?>

Thanks for your reply, but the url is not dynamic it is static. When the page gets presented it is fine then they continue on to another page, if they go back via browser/Java Script back button they are asked to refresh the page.
Im thinking it is a webserver not cacheing the page but not sure. HELP

When using forms and database-generated page content,
its always best to build your site so that people never ever have to use the back button.

Som browsers will cache the forms data, others won't.
Some browsers cache script-generated pages, other don't.
If you make your sure "backbuttonfree" you won't have the backbutton problems. 🙂

Ok, I can relate to that but when you say "Back button free" what do you mean? How can I disable the back button on the clients machine?

When I say "backbutton free" i mean
your site should be built so that there is no need to press the back button.
There should never be a page where users are "stuck" and they can only move using the back-button.

For example, if you have a fillout form, users will press "submit" to continue.
Then you'll probably have a validator that tells the user he messed up and he needs to go back to the form to input more data.
Don't ever let the user do that through the back button.
Instead, offer a proper button and re-print the form with the data in it. it's a lot more work for you, but it's worth it in the end.

This would come down to website design, like using frames, so they don't use the back button there to get back to the main page.

From a programming stand point, if they messed up on the form, you could just put a header back to the form. Also have the page forward the user back to the main navigation page if the submit goes through.

Btw, you said it was a static link? Simple html will work then!

Hello all,

 First off, thank you for your replys.  I think i may be miss-stating my problem.  I have a button that sends to a dynamic page that is gotten from a mysql db.  now when the user is done on that page they can use the page navigation to go elsewhere, but if they then use the back button to the previously displayed dynamic page they get the refresh error and need to "refresh" the page.  Is there a way to prevent this?

Im thinking at this point, no as it needs to be cached by the users browser.
