Foreign issues... a bit off subject

I just finished my first major PHP/MySQL driven 'professional' site. I say 'professional' although 6 months ago I knew nothing about PHP. Your site and a wonderful Textbook from Wrox have been indispensible! Thanks!

Now that it is more or less finished, they want to duplicate it in Japanese and in German.
I plan on just duplicating the tables that need translating and the client will change those and be providing the copy for the static pages. As many of you have dealt successfully with the German issue (or should I say the English issue 🙂 would you have any input? Anything I need to be concerned with for Japanese? can it just cut and paste from a Word doc? What about search issues? I am using ht://dig and I've noticed a couple of concerns on it's mail list.

Any input will be much appreciated.

Hmm a helpfull hint there.

As I recall, japanese characters are in double-byte format.
So methinks that cut and past won't work very well.
