filesize of file on another server

does anybody know how to get the filesize of a file on another server?

$filesize = filesize("ftp://ftp.testserver.com/dir/file.zip");
doesn't work.

You have to read it, count the bytes and see.

If it is on a web server, you can request it and then see if the http
headers include Content-Length, but this is optional so you have no
assurance it will be there in any particular case.

thanks for your posting, but your solution is nor suitable for my problem.

I want to make a (big) list of files and their sizes. And because of the size of each file is about 2-3 MB, I can not read every file, count it's size and print the result.
Well I "could", but I hope there is a more elegant solution.

Ok sorry for being ignorant here, I am stilllearning the programming, but how would this apply to what he is trying to do? I am trying to do the same, except I am trying to read the filedate from a file on an FTP server.

Well using the FTP functions you can connect to an ftp site, get a file listing, and get a filesize from a remote file.
That sounds to me like exactly what he is trying to do.

The process of how this is done.
open connection,
get filesize
close connection

:-)

The manual is full of info about how to use the ftp functions. that should give you a good start.
