ie 5.5 vs pdf

The following code has worked great in IE 5.0 (win) (I have some workarounds for IE 4.0)
I use it to enable users to download PDFs when prompted.

It does not work in IE 5.5 (including sp1).

Any ideas?

This may be a problem with IE 5.5's interaction with Acrobat. Since upgrading to 5.5, I haven't been able to view PDF files directly in the browser - it opens Acrobat and then shows a blank page. I have had to open Acrobat separately and view the page from its own window.

Find some other PDF file that you know is legitimate and try to view it in your browser. I'm curious to know if this is a problem other people are having (but not curious enough to go looking for the answer).

In theory, the headers you send should prompt a "save as" dialog box. If so, no problem. But if IE tries to open it directly, this will fail, because Acrobat plugin needs the Content-length information to work. Just add the header and it should work fine.

We experienced the same problem with these type of files. This is how we corrected the problem.
1. Make sure your running IE 5.5
2. Be sure to install the SR 1 for IE 5.5
3. Be sure your running Adobe Acrobat 4.0 (not 3.0).
4. Open Adobe Acrobat 4.0 by itself.
5. Click on File
6. Click on Preferences
7. Click on General
8. Deselect the option to: Web Browser Integration

That should do it. This does not correct the problem of opening the files directly in IE, but it's a great work around....and it works.

guys the solution u have given works fine... but in case i don't want to go for this option there is one more thing which will solve the issue...

1. install sp2 for I% 5.5

u will be able to view all pdfs embedded in html page through IE 5.5. incase it doesn't work do the following

1. install acrobat
2. install IE 5.5 with SP2

remember in both the cases SP2(service pack 2) is the most important component.

it will work ... we have it in our industrial solutions...
