Japanese php4

I am currently using php 3.15i as this is the latest build that has Japanese support (I think)

I would like to migrate to php4 as soon as possible.

Is anyone using php4 with MySql over Japanese (shift-jis or EUC) data? Is it possible/sensible ? What are the things to watch out for?

Any help much appreciated.

If you have not already done so, download the "jstring" (with things like i18n_convert()) and "mbregex" packages from:

PHP4.X can output (via echo()) SJIS data out-of-the-box. However, watch
out of those "magic-quotes" thingy, and try not to embedd <?echo $var ?>
in your URLs...

i am trying to use it but run into some problems.

as my provider is not yet running php 4.0.6 i can not use the multi-byte functions. and mysql makes mistakes with backslashing.

especially when i read/write the katakana word "robinson" the mysql data gets too many backslashes.

as i am working on mobile phone pages everything is coming in via HTTP GET or POST as Shift-JIS.

there is a very nice and usable mobile phone library for PHP at http://hawhaw.de (imode & hdml support = DOCOMO & AU).

in addition i wrote my own mobile-markup-language for IMODE & JPHONE, its very simple and basic but works great with the built-in symbols (i-moji) and pictures.

if you know of a good provider that offers mysql & php to reasonable price and fast speed please let me know.

any comment or help is very welcome!
