Upload fails, MySQL server has gone away

I'm only able to upload small file. Seems like i get some kind of timeout.
I've check the post_max_size in php.ini and it is set to 8M

I'm not even able to upload a file of 900Kb

Anyone who can help me?

The MySQL manual says:

If you need big queries (for example, if you are working with big BLOB columns), you can increase the query limit by starting mysqld with the -O max_allowed_packet=# option
(default 1M). The extra memory is allocated on demand, so mysqld will use more memory only when you issue a big query or when mysqld must return a big result row!

Yeah, i discover that right after i post that i could set the max_allowed_packet size. I've tried to do that in WinMySQLAdmin which stores it in my.ini but when i do a show variables; i still get only 1M at max_allowed_packet.

I'm using Windows 2000 server.

Are you familiar of how to set that variable in Win2000 environment.

You did restart the mysql server after you changed it?

Yes. What i did was to stop the service do the changes, then save and finally start the service.

Is this correct written:

#set-variable=max_allowed_packet=6M

Yes it is very correct, but you might want to remove the # from the beginning of the line, as that makes the line a comment, making MySQL skip the parameter.

Hope I'm not too late to contribute to this topic. Pal, I had this problem too, and was searching through forums looking for an answer. I'm also using win2K pro, php on apache and mysql server configuration, complete with set-variable=max_allowed_packet=6M entry in my.ini file.
But it still won't upload a 1.77MB file.
So I tried adding this entry
set-variable=delayed_insert_timeout=1000
and restarting my machine. Guess what? It Worked!

On that topic, I noticed that the file uploads are pretty slow, even on a localhost. Anyone has a solution for that?
Maybe its because Apache is not meant to run on a Window's environment.
