How to set User Authentication ???

Hello All,
I want to set user authentication for a perticuler directory. What shoild I do for that?? I have read about the ".htaccess" but unable to set 🙁 ..I dont know much about the "Apache" . could anybody tell me how to set ".htaccess" file and "password and users files too" ..(Tell me in details please) Any help would be appritiable..
