PHP not CGI language??

I recently found an article on the Internet which had the headlines "PHP vs. CGI". CGI stand for PERL according to that article. Isn't PHP a CGI-language as well?

Yes. PHP can be a CGI language, much like perl doesn't have to be (ie -> mod_perl).

Because Perl has been (or was) the most common choice for writing CGI scripts, it's sometimes referred to as plain CGI.

This is incorrect, of course. Perhaps you should contact the author of the article and inform him/her of the blunder.

CGI = common gateway interface.
It's the way in which the webserver communicates with other programs.
CGI != programming language.
